Frequently Asked Questions

  • Aluminum is a lightweight, corrosion-resistant, sustainable and eco-friendly metal, making it an ideal choice for windows and doors. It does not rust, rot, or warp ensuring long-term durability. It is a strong material, allowing for the creation of slim-profile frames that can support large glass panels. Aluminum frames can be thermally broken, which helps reduce heat transfer and improve energy-efficiency. Aluminum windows and doors require minimal maintenance, can be customized into various shapes and sizes, and are highly resistant to extreme weather conditions.

  • Since 1978, RAM has believed in producing superior quality products and servicing those products with local experts that can provide expedited responses to any customer request. RAM’s core competency is thermally-broken aluminum window and door products that are durable, energy-efficient, sustainable, and weather-resistant. Our all-aluminum frames are finished with either high-performance paint (AAMA 2604 or 2605 grade) or are anodized (Class I or Class II thicknesses available) to accommodate standards at the highest level. RAM partners with key glass suppliers to provide Low-E, dual-paned, ultimate performance glass that prevents harmful solar rays and reflects heat. For our operable products, RAM utilizes industry-leading, high-quality hardware made for function and durability. RAM exceeds industry standards for insulation and energy performance. We take pride in our long-lasting relationships with our customers, architects, builders, and partners, and are committed to offering them first-class customer service.

  • Yes, aluminum windows and doors do require some maintenance to ensure they remain in good condition and continue to function properly. While aluminum is a durable and corrosion-resistant material, it can still be affected by environmental factors and general wear and tear over time. Learn more about care and maintenance.

  • Most windows and doors have a lifespan of 15-20 years, depending on the materials and maintenance. If your windows and doors are approaching or exceeding this age, it may be time to consider replacement. Aluminum windows and doors are resistant to rust and corrosion, making them last 20 to 30 years or longer.

  • Thermally broken windows are constructed with a frame that has two distinct “breaks” in it, typically made of different materials. These breaks create a barrier between the interior and exterior parts of the frame, which helps reduce heat transfer between the interior and exterior of a building. They are particularly valuable in climates with extreme temperatures, as they can help maintain a comfortable indoor environment and reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling.

  • Low-E windows, short for “Low-Emissivity” windows, refers to the glass being utilized.  Low-E is an energy-efficient coating that reduces the amount of heat that can pass through the glass while still allowing visible light to enter, improving energy efficiency and comfort in homes and buildings.

  • All of our operable windows and doors have the option of screens with the exception of swing and pivot doors.

  • Retractable screens are screens that can be rolled up or pulled back when not in use. They are designed to provide insect protection and ventilation while remaining unobtrusive and easily storable when not needed. Retractable screens are commonly used on bi-fold and sliding doors.

  • All of our products come standard with Low-E, dual-paned glass. However, glass options are numerous. RAM partners with some of the largest glass manufacturers in the world, gives our customers a very wide selection of options and features.

  • Yes. While RAM offers a selection of popular grid pattern options, you can customize your own.

  • Painted black and dark bronze anodized are two different methods for finishing or coloring the aluminum frame. Painted black uses pigmented paint and is more susceptible to damage and fading, while dark bronze anodized involves an electrochemical process that creates a durable, long-lasting, uniform finish with a dark bronze color.

  • Knowing when it's time to replace windows and doors in your home depends on various factors, including their age, condition, performance, and your personal preferences. Some common signs that can help you determine when it's time to replace them include age, visible damage, drafts and energy efficiency, condensation and moisture, difficulty in operation, noise reduction, aesthetic considerations, security concerns, maintenance demands, and home renovation.

  • Windows and doors can be installed any time of the year. Spring and fall are often considered ideal because they typically offer moderate temperatures and lower humidity levels. But if your windows and doors need to be replaced, there’s no need to wait for specific temperatures. RAM professionals install one window and door at a time and take extra precautions to ensure your home stays comfortable during installs.

  • Replacing your windows and doors can offer several benefits, including improved energy efficiency leading to lower energy bills, enhanced comfort year-round with consistent indoor temperatures, noise reduction, increased home value, improved security, easier maintenance, better ventilation, and reduced condensation. Some other benefits to consider are lowering your carbon footprint by making your home more environmentally friendly, updating the appearance of your home, and having the ability to customize your windows and doors based on your own personal preferences. Don’t forget to take advantage of the tax credits that may be available as well.

  • We believe aluminum windows to be the best replacement windows based on energy-efficiency, durability, and aesthetics. The specific type of windows for your home can depend on various factors, including your budget, aesthetic preferences, climate, and specific needs. For example, casement and awning windows provide excellent ventilation. Single-hung and sliding windows are a good choice for tight spaces. Heavy picture windows provide unobstructed views and a lot of natural light into a room. Speciality windows can be tailor-made to fit your unique architectural designs. Learn more about our window types.

  • Whether you should replace all of your windows and doors at once or do it gradually depends on several factors, including your budget, the condition of your existing windows and doors, and your long-term plans.

  • Cost is determined by the products, the features and options you choose, and the installation cost. To get an accurate cost, please tell us more about your project.
